Stories Of Change

The supportive employment program was life changing for me. I went from being unable to work to a new path in life entirely.

I first found out about the supportive employment program in late spring 2024 and was offered a position within the thrift store to help accommodate my unique physical needs. After going through the application and interview process, I started October 1st, 2025. I began my mentoring process with the Supportive Employment Coordinator, Patti Cullen, and my Peer Support training with Lifewise. In this time I learned a lot about keeping the store running well, supporting our participants and community, and how to stay organized in my work overall. Because of the supportive employment program, Patti, and the team at Mokami, I have now moved on to a new position and an incredibly supportive community.

This has generational impact. My daughter sees me working on myself and overcoming things that have impacted us both.

It's helping me ensure that I can keep my job and my career. It's deprogramming trauma and helping my brain function better, ensuring I can provide a safe and happy lifestyle for my daughter and a better quality of life for both of us. My daughter sees me doing these sessions, working on myself and overcoming things that have impacted us both. It's a monumental impact.

It's the first time in my whole life I've ever really focused on myself.

This is making a huge difference for me. Honestly, it just affects every part of my life. It's the first time in my whole life I've ever really focused on myself, what my boundaries need to be, and healing my own trauma.

She shared that it felt like a weight was lifted off her chest to be heard, seen, and believed.

It was a day like any other at Mokami when someone walked through the door. She said she wanted someone to talk to. We spoke privately and she shared some experiences she had been through. She told us she had never told anyone about her experiences of violence before and it felt good to tell someone. We sat together, coloured some colouring sheets, talked about the future, and made some goals together. Sometimes in this work, we see transformational moments for participants. Other times, the impact is simply bearing witness to someone's experience, to their strength, to their pain, and to their resilience.
